The increase in the Q

The best performance obtained on a magnetic confinement fusion machine, working in a D-T mixture, corresponds to an amplification factor Q of 0.65, which is very close to the breakeven. It was obtained on the JET (Joint European Torus) tokamak at Culham (UK), which generated nearly 16 Megawatts for 1s in 1996.

JET is the largest tokamak currently in operation; it has enabled us to explore plasma confinement scenarios, tritium cycle management and remote handling issues inside the tokamak. ITER should achieve a gain factor of 10.
