Since the late 1960s, a number of different machines have enabled us to make significant progress in understanding and controlling fusion by magnetic confinement.
They have passed through three major technological stages that we would like to bring together in the ITER project: the definition of the operating mode to achieve spontaneous confinement, an amplification factor close to 1 and a sufficiently long lifetime to envisage stabilised operation.
