The CEA hosted the 36th meeting of the Broader Approach (BA) Steering Committee on 17–18 December 2025

The DRF (CEA) organized the 36th meeting of the BASC on 17–18 December 2025 in Cadarache and Aix-en-Provence, France.

This key EU–Japan initiative supports the ITER Project and the development of nuclear fusion as a clean and sustainable energy source.

As part of the meeting, the European and Japanese delegations visited the WEST tokamak, attended a plasma experiment, and had the opportunity to enter the machine hall to observe the facility up close.
After 19 years of collaboration, the Steering Committee welcomed the steady progress of the three BA projects – IFMIF/EVEDA, IFERC and JT-60SA – acknowledged recent achievements, and approved the 2026 Work Programmes.

As part of the continued commitment of CEA-IRFM, Jeronimo Garcia will assume the position of STP Project Leader effective February 1, 2026 and Emmanuel Joffrin, closely involved in the project for many years, acts as an expert member of the Commission.

The Broader Approach continues to stand as a successful model of international scientific cooperation, strengthening the EU–Japan partnership toward the energy of the future.
